SAS Note 5831
SN-005831 OUTSTANDING PROBLEM
"Error: Library x is not in a valid format for access method random"
message appears
Product: Base SAS
Component: SAS data library I/O
Priority: MEDIUM
This error error message usually appears when SAS receives a
"Device not ready error" message from the operating system.
Here are situations where an "Device not ready error" might be received
from the operating system:
1. A libname is assigned to a zip or jaz drive in an autoexec.sas file
and no disk is in the zip or jaz drive when SAS is started.
2. A diskette is not in the diskette drive.
3. You point to a network location but you do not have a share assigned
for that location or you don't have authority to access the location.
The error message is not very informative and will be replaced with one
that will be greatly improved in Version 9.

If you tried this same search using the SAS Institute's
web site and its search engine, here is what you will get.
Obviously, the search engines are different between their
email and website search facilities:
Search on "access method RANDOM" on SI's web site
So, it may prove helpful to do both searches (email and web)
when looking for information.
